According to lefthandersday.com, International Left-Handers Day was first celebrated in 1992 as an opportunity for left-handers everywhere to celebrate their uniqueness and increase public awareness of the struggles left-handers deal with on a day-to-day basis,  including opening doors, writing in spiral notebooks, using a computer mouse and keyboards and even scissors – they can all be awkward and frustrating!

With only 10% of the population being left-handed, lefties are certainly in the minority, but they have some special qualities. Being left-handed is an advantage in many sports, and left-handed people are more likely to be visual rather than language-based, making them ideal for artistic pursuits.

Some famous lefties include: Barack Obama, Sir Isaac Newtown, Prince William of England, Oprah Winfrey, Jay Leno and Marilyn Monroe.

So if you're left-handed, today is your day to celebrate the special person you are!
